Johanna Laurie and John-Michael Dumais discuss the efforts to censor and even criminalize speech in various parts of the world, including the US. We cover the main arguments for and against the limiting of free speech, and the problem of polarization in the world dominated by social media. We lay out a framework for elevating free speech beyond the rancorous exchange of polemical views, that could lead to much more constructive engagement around disagreements, one that preserves respect and goodwill.
